Then and Now: Finland Congregational Church

Established in 1912, the Finnish Golgotha Congregational Church still sits at 733 44th Street, but now it's called the Brooklyn Baptist Church. The doors have recently gotten new handles (the beautiful old doors went a while ago), the stained glass has protective plexiglass - or something similar - to protect and dull the windows, and the prototypical message board adorns the outer wall, but otherwise it looks shockingly similar. Almost 100 years, and still lovely.

They're sponsoring a block party on 44th street tomorrow. We'll see how that goes. I've never seen anyone but gray haired old white people come out of there so it might not be the most fun block party. But, on the plus side they're doing something other than telling us "only if we abide by the principles taught in the Bible will our nation prosper" via their message board.

Oooohh I can't wait! I think I saw the "No Parking" signs on 45th Street, not 44th Street.

Thanks for mentioning it; I was wondering if it was a block party or some other celebration due to the "Street Fair" description on the signs.

Maybe there's a street fair on 45th as well. Between the block party, the possible street fair, and the Shakespeare performance in the park, it looks like there will be plenty to do tomorrow. Now if we only had a little coffeshop by the park at 6th and 44th...
