Wow. I have to say I'm impressed. This morning, my trip to the playground was greeted by an upright, repaired, relatively sturdy looking fence at the parkside entrance to the playground. Another playground aficionado told me that an "official looking" van came by yesterday afternoon and "official looking men" looked the fence over. I guess they agreed that it was a hazard, because it's
happily repaired now.*Unfortunately, some dim wits have already removed a couple of pieces from the fence; this is not what it looked like this morning.
In related news: The trash around the park and playground is totally gone (or it was in the morning). That's why we love the Sunset Park Staff. They manage to clean-up after tons of people, many of whom can't seem to figure out what those weird metal bins around the park are actually meant to do.

Well anyway, now you know why the fence is the way it is. Kids are obviously taking out sections of it to wack each other over the heads. I'll leave it to you to decide which is the greater safety hazard. But you can understand why the parks people were reluctant to replace it.
It's a shame. Prospect Park had the same problem in the 80's with heavily compacted grass and after a few years of careful fencing and management all the green came back.
BTW, censorship is bad, OK? Now take the tour, and post the results. Or are you too scared?
I prefer to think of them taking out pieces to play Gawain and the Green Giant, but okay.
I have no idea what you're talking about in your last comment. To what censorship are you referring? Which tour? Scared of what? Do tell.
Oh, I replied to anon2 about the gangs in SP. I suggested he/she walk down 4th ave to 59th st and back up 5th on any given thurs, fri, or sat night. Look around, bring your camera, and post the results. That reply didn't appear here, and I figured perhaps it wasn't something that was ready to be heard. But perhaps it just slipped by you.
Anyhoos, if you've the nerve for it, it'd make for some compelling blogging. I've seen some really remarkable things there, and the scene just keeps getting more raw as the years go by.
BTW, what do you think about all those fancy police cameras mounted on every block on the telephone poles on 5th ave? They just put those in last year, in lieu of some actual beat cops that might help improve things. Clearly, someone forgot to tell the NYPD that people act out more when they think there is a studio audience (wink).

The police cameras have been on 5th Avenue for several years; perhaps they've put in a few more now. As a deterrent, I suppose they work - somewhat. However, I've always thought it was more about "we'll get you after you've done something naughty" as opposed to "we'll keep you from doing something naughty" which is what more cops on the street would accomplish. I prefer cops on the sidewalks rather than in cars, myself.
